The Good News
How to Gain
Eternal Life
From the Gospel of John · Authorized Version of 1611
"These are written, that ye might believe" — John 20:31
The word “Gospel” means Good News. The Good News is this — God has made a way for sinful man to be forgiven, justified, and given eternal life, through the Lord Jesus Christ alone.
The Purpose of the Gospel of John
"But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."
John 20:31 · AV 1611
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."
John 17:3 · AV 1611
The Gospel of John was written with a clear, specific purpose — that you might believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and, in believing, have life through His name. Eternal life is not a vague concept; it is a personal knowledge of the one true God, through the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Problem — All Men Are Sinners
"He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."
John 3:18-19 · AV 1611
"Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do."
John 8:44 · AV 1611
The Bible is clear — every person born into this world is by nature a sinner, separated from God. Man is not naturally a child of God; he is by nature under condemnation. The light has come into the world in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, but men by nature love darkness. This is the human condition.
The Penalty — Eternal Death
"Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."
John 5:28-29 · AV 1611
"If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned."
John 15:6 · AV 1611
The penalty for sin is not merely physical death — it is eternal separation from God in the lake of fire. There are two resurrections: one unto life, and one unto damnation. Every soul will face God in judgment. The question is — which resurrection will you be part of?
God's Provision — You Must Be Born Again
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
John 3:3 · AV 1611
"That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
John 3:6-7 · AV 1611
Natural birth makes a man a child of Adam — a sinner. To enter the kingdom of God, a man must be born again — a spiritual birth from above. This is not a reformation, not a turning over a new leaf, not joining a church. It is a new birth — a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit that takes place the moment a person truly trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ.
God Gave His Only Begotten Son
"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
John 3:14-16 · AV 1611
God did not leave man without remedy. In His love, He sent His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, into the world. Christ was lifted up on the cross — the perfect, sinless sacrifice — bearing the penalty for man's sin. He died, was buried, and rose again from the dead on the third day. Salvation is available to "whosoever" — that includes you.
Christ Is the Only Way
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
John 14:6 · AV 1611
"Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."
John 6:68 · AV 1611
There is only one way to God — the Lord Jesus Christ. Not religion. Not good works. Not baptism. Not church membership. Jesus Christ said plainly: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
Receive Him by Faith
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
John 1:12 · AV 1611
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."
John 3:36 · AV 1611
Eternal life is received, not earned. It is obtained by personally receiving the Lord Jesus Christ — believing on His name, trusting in His finished work on the cross. The moment you receive Him as your own personal Saviour, God gives you the right and the power to become a son of God. It is that personal. It is that real.
Trust Him NOW — Do Not Delay
"Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light."
John 12:35-36 · AV 1611
The Lord Jesus Christ is the light of the world. The opportunity to receive Him is now — while you have light. Life is uncertain, and eternity is long. The Holy Spirit is speaking to your heart today. Do not harden your heart. Do not delay. "Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2).
The Promise — Eternal Security
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand."
John 10:27-29 · AV 1611
This is the promise of the Lord Jesus Christ to every one who has received Him as Saviour. Eternal life — real, permanent, certain. "They shall never perish." Not "they may not perish" — NEVER perish. Held in the hand of the Son, and in the hand of the Father. No man, no devil, no circumstance can take away what God has given. The born-again believer is eternally secure in Christ.
A Simple Prayer
Are You Ready to Be Saved?
Salvation is not in a prayer — it is in a Person, the Lord Jesus Christ. But if you believe in your heart what the Bible says about your sin and about Christ's death and resurrection, you can call upon Him right now in simple, sincere faith:
“Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I believe that you died for my sins and rose again from the dead. Right now, I receive you as my own personal Saviour. Thank you for saving me. Amen.”
Remember: it is not the words of the prayer that save you — it is your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. If you have sincerely trusted Christ as your Saviour, you are saved and have eternal life.
